Cyber safe precautions for Data/security during International Travel
1. Keep your main/primary phone safe and avoid using it internationally- Use a Temporary or Secondary Device
- Avoid traveling with primary phone or laptop.
- Use a spare device with only essential apps and minimal personal data, without UPI/Banking details, personal data like Aadhar Card, PAN etc.
- This limits exposure if device is inspected or compromised.
2. Rely on Secure Cloud Storage
- Store important files in encrypted cloud services (e.g., Proton Mail, secure drives).
- Avoid storing sensitive information locally on devices.
- Ensure your device is encrypted and uses a strong password.
3. Enable Strong Authentication
- Use a secure passcode, fingerprint, or facial recognition to lock device.
- Avoid using simple PINs or swipe patterns.
- Set devices to auto-lock quickly when idle.
4. Use Airplane Mode
- Activate airplane mode to prevent device from connecting to networks and syncing data from the cloud.
- It helps restrict automatic data transmission or remote access during inspections.
5. Power Off When Not in Use
- Turning off devices to protect it against unauthorized access and advanced hacking tools.
- Powered-off devices with encryption remain locked and data stays secure.
- Deleted files, browser history and app data might still be retrievable if not powered off.
6. Know the Local Laws
- Some Countries, like the UK, require travellers to unlock their devices. Non-compliance could lead to legal consequences, including fines or detention.
- Research digital privacy laws at destination before undertaking international travel.
7. Keep Updated & Informed
- Keep devices’ operating systems and security apps up to date.
- Be cautious about trying to hide or obscure data—it can raise suspicion during inspections.
8. Avoid Public Wifi by using primary personal details.
9. Some specifics
- Turn off data roaming before leaving India.
